One of my earliest memories of poetry, at eight or nine, is having to learn William Wordsworth’s
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vale and hill
Of course, I had no knowledge or interest in Romantic art, but we were given a verse each week
as homework in the lead up to Easter.
It has taken sixty years to visit this landscape which has proved so inspirational to many artists
whose work I admire. Perhaps I thought it would be too similar to the Highlands where we live.
The painting is a result of a walk to Sale Fell on a September morning, looking over to Skiddaw
and above Bassenthwaite Lake.
