Alison Elliott trained at Winchester School of Art and Newcastle Polytechnic. Taking her lead from the old masters, Elliott paints in a classical style utilising tried and tested techniques in oil. In her canine portraits she aims to capture the spirit of her subjects, which she highlights by ‘cutting them out’ of their environment and placing them against a neutral background. This minimal approach, combined with an almost obsessive level of detail in her brush strokes, firmly places each animal as the epicentre of the painting. Each portrait is painted on a gesso panel in four layers, which enables her to achieve a precise level of detail.
