Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1949, Elizabeth Butterworth trained at the Rochdale School of Art, Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, in the UK, Denmark, Japan, the USA, Venezuela, and Qatar, with numerous solo shows at museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Virginia, and the Natural History Museum, London. It is included in over 25 museums and public institutions internationally including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
