In September 2017 Jonathan Cooper will be exhibiting new works by renowned botanical artist Rosie Sanders, who is internationally celebrated for her striking watercolour paintings of flowers. Always innovative, her work challenges the boundaries and perceptions of contemporary botanical art.
Evoking a range of emotions, her paintings transcend pure representation or scientific documentation. Perhaps best known for her large and expressive paintings in watercolour, since her previous exhibition with Jonathan Cooper in 2015 she has increasingly explored the dramatic intensity of charcoal in her work, and the luxuriant texture of petals emerging from darkness into light.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to compare and contrast paintings in this new medium with her bold and saturated watercolours, which have recently been fêted in the publication Rosie Sanders’ Flowers: A Celebration of Botanical Art, published by Batsford Press. Many of the works in this exhibition will also be smaller in scale, imbuing them with a sense of intimacy that invites closer viewing.
The exhibition will be an exciting journey of discovery, as each painting will be accompanied by a letter explaining its inspiration and genesis, whether a plant glimpsed in late afternoon light on a woodland walk, or lovingly grown in the artist’s own garden. Each will be enclosed in an envelope hand-made and illustrated by Rosie Sanders, making the show a unique insight into the world of a remarkable British artist.
