James was born in Norfolk, England in 1972. He makes his paintings in rural Lincolnshire using a 17th century method and an amalgam of traditional and fine modern materials. He makes his panels, canvasses, paints, varnishes and mediums himself to ancient recipes using simple, sound, and long-lasting ingredients.
